Wonder how this will be received in Vic, funded by the State Government, taxpayers have forked out $100.000 to build an imaginary Melbourne in cyberspace on virtual world website Second Life.
news.com.au - $100,000 on Melbourne's Second Life (the computer game) in cyberspace (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,22572384-421,00.html)
Minister for Information and Communication Technology Theo Theophanous said site may boost tourism to the real world Melbourne and help the Government keep up with online technology. We are monitoring all new media platforms to ensure Victoria remains a technologically advanced state and is best positioned to make the most of these rapidly developing worlds.
But Opposition spokesman on innovation Richard Dalla-Riva questioned why taxpayers should pay for an expensive computer game.
Second Life boasts almost 10 million members but the amount of people who use the site is far lower, Mr Yardley said. "In the past seven days only 449,000 people have logged into Second Life and in the past month less than one million have logged in," he said.
Despite the hype, Second Life crashes too often, takes too long to download and is hard to use, Mr Yardley said.
Been a lot of hype about this game of late, and a lot have forked out great sums of coin to get on the bandwagon, puckes us, can others see the point? Is it worth getting involved and spending vast amounts of money to be in a computer game?
Each to their own.
